Dedicated to my mother on her 78th birthday, the day of the pieceʼs debut performance by the “La Primitiva” Music Society of Rafelbunyol on 1 July 2007 at the Palau
de la Música in Valencia.This performance formed part of the City of Valencia
International Band Competition.
The piece is based on a free tripartite structure, which develops and incorporates
totally Spanish themes that are clearly reflected throughout this fantasia.
The first section opens with an attractive introduction played by the tuned percussion, leading us directly into a cantabile from the French horn answered by the bassoon and cello. Next, a new theme appears stated by the wind instruments accompanied rhythmically by bongos, which takes us to the following section.
In the second section, the main theme appears at the tempo of a pasodoble. Here we find all the identifying characteristics of a piece deeply rooted within Spanish music and which will climax with a full instrumental ensemble that abounds in splendour and sonic richness.
The third and final section begins with a cadenza by the alto sax which continues with a malagueña theme in 3/4. The complete saxophone statement in answered by the full band ensemble, bringing the Spanish fantasia “Dolores Pedro” by Antonio Sánchez Pedro to a close.
